A long continuous band of colorful coral reef filled with cracks, crevices, and holes which attract all sorts of marine life. There are Sand Rays under the coral ledges, Stonefish and Scorpion fish as well as Splendid Toad fish and an abundance of Trigger and Tang fish. The incredible quantity of very large Lobster and Crab in this area as well as Octopus which are all typically shy in daylight, makes this a superb choice for night dive.
Chankanaab national park is a premier Eco Park on the island of Cozumel. In 1980 Chankanaab was declared a National Park. The word Chankanaab comes from the Mayan language. Chan meaning “small” and Kanaab meaning “Sea” or “Ocean” refers to the natural lagoon in the interior of the park. Chankanaab is located about 10 minutes by taxi from downtown and is a great place to spend the day on the beach, snorkeling, and scuba diving. Entrance to the park is $21.00 for adults and $14.00 for kids under 12. Enjoy tropical drinks from the tiki bar and food from the restaurant. The park also has several dive shops which provide snorkeling and scuba rentals as well as underwater guided tours of the park’s reef.
Chankanaaab provides visitors with adventure, fun, and relaxation while at the same time experiencing environmental conservation. Chankanaab long ago was occupied by Mayan settlements and as legend has it, was refuge for pirates looking to supplies and a safe place to bury their treasure.
The park offers a beach volleyball court, hammock area, a children's playground, showers and lockers. Sun bathers will love the soft white sand. The beach is separated from the Caribbean Sea by a rock wall that lines the cove. Submerged statues, a small underwater cave, and abundant marine life make this a fascinating place to snorkel and scuba dive.
